A few more APIs

Sorry for not posting here in a while. Starting a company definitely cuts into the time that you can spend on blogging. I don't know how some of the really prolific folks do it!

In particular Yahoo has been on a tear and I know that there are a few more APIs that are going to be released soon (hopefully before the new year) so stay tuned.

Here are a few more APIs that have been added to the wiki:

Aggregate Knowledge - Add behavior based recommendations of items to your web site
Amazon Mechanical Turk - Get humans to do things you want by paying them
CoregMedia - Lead Generation / Co-Registration Network API
ecommStats - Get access to web analytics through the APIs provided
Rhapsody - Let's you play music through the Rhapsody website
Yahoo Traffic - Traffic Information from Yahoo!
Yahoo Local - Get access to location information and reviews about things in Yahoo's database.

Web Services sweeping the landscape

This is a repost from 1000 Flowers Bloom that I thought would be interesting to this audience:

There's an interesting discussion going on around Web Service components. Are they Internet Connected Compenents as Scoble is calling them? Maybe Raw Potatoes as Ethan Stock and I have mused about? You know - the things you make mashups out of.

No matter what you name them they are changing the way that functionality is shared and distributed around the web. Why do a mapping component when Google will do it for you? Why write a music engine when Yahoo will do it for you? Entrepreneurs should be building on top of these to create great apps.

Zvents is a great example of this. Take a core idea like - we need to have a good way to find all the events that are out there and then layer functionality like Google Maps on top of it to make it better.

I had an interesting conversation today with Greg Isaacs over at eBay and he's got some cool examples of the eBay APIs being used with things like Google Maps functionality. They put out a call at their last developers conference for more functionality like this and it looks like their developers have delivered. He showed me some truly cool stuff when I talked to him. I'll be posting the interview next week.

The real question in my mind is - what are the components? What should they be? I created a wiki over at wsfinder to help answer that question. One thing that's fascinating is to see which areas have lots of APIs from different providers and which don't... but that's fodder for another post.

Special Thank You to Toni Schneider from Yahoo

I want to say a special thank you to Toni Schneider who is the VP of Developer Relations at Yahoo. I had a quick hallway conversation with him and the nex day it turns out that all the Yahoo API information has been updated on the site.

Thanks Toni - it's very much appreciated!

The APIs just keep coming...

So I have to apologize for not blogging more lately. Unfortunately I was almost caught in Hurricane Rita when it hit and that has slowed me down a bit. While off topic I'll put that in my next post... I promise to blog more regularly!

Luckily the wiki has kept on trucking in my absence - gotta love it!

Here are some more new APIs:
Drupal    Distributed authentication in every Drupal site
LID    Put out by NetMesh
OpenID    Based on LiveJournal
SXIP    Commercial Identity Provider
Typekey    Identity Service

Here are some more examples:
Dropcash    Mashup of Typekey and Paypal
ProTag    Integration of Web Services (especially Biological Markup and Name Services) into the Microsoft Office applications
CARad Express    Create and manage high-quality vehicle listings

Special thanks to Julian Bond to providing a lot of the Identity APIs.

Olive Branch to Programmable Web and Web API Tracker

Well I've been looking around at some of the other Web Services and Open API directories that have sprung up and I have to say that I think it's great that people are interested in providing this resource to the community.

One thing that I've been thinking about is though is - does it really make sense for all of us to have our own sites?

So - consider this an olive branch to the good folks over at Programmable Web, the Web API tracker and anyone else that I may have missed.

Let's join forces.

Let's give the community one definitive place to go rather than three different places when they want to go look for new APIs to play with or when they want to let people know about the cool APIs that they've got.

Any takers?

I propose a summit at the Web 2.0 conference coming up at bar in neutral territory. I'll buy the first round.  :)

More APIs

We got more APIs and examples in over the last few days:

APIs:
Prodigem - Gives you API access to the Bittorent Hosting Service

Examples:
Glendor.com - Jobs search demo for the Bay Area

Andale -  Manage multiple storefronts on Ebay, Yahoo etc.
Mpire -  Revolutionizing the way entrepreneurs sell

I wanted to call out Niall Kennedy in particular for some great updates to the Technorati description and cool examples of their APIs in use.
